Historic Sites of Al Ain

Al Ain preserves a continuous history of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic period. This collection features UNESCO World Heritage sites including the Hili Archaeological Park, known for its Bronze Age tombs, and several defensive structures like the Muwaiji and Al Muraba’a forts. These sites showcase traditional mud-brick architecture, ancient falaj irrigation systems, and the strategic importance of the region’s oases in the development of Arabian Peninsula culture.

Cultural Sites of Al Ain

The UAE's first UNESCO World Heritage site, comprising six oases and the archaeological sites of Hili, Bidaa Bint Saud, and Jebel Hafit. These locations demonstrate the transition from nomadic lifestyles to sedentary settlements centered around desert oases.

Muwaiji Fort

A 20th-century mud-brick fortification and the birthplace of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The site features a contemporary glass-walled museum detailing the history of the fort and the Al Nahyan family.

Al-Khandaq fort

A 19th-century defensive structure characterized by a deep dry moat, or khandaq, surrounding its walls. It features four circular corner towers and served as a strategic military outpost.

Al Muraba'a Fort

Built in 1948 under the direction of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, this fort served as a police station and administrative center. It is named after its distinctive square watchtower.

Hili Archaeological Park

A public park containing the UAE's largest collection of Bronze Age and Iron Age ruins. The site preserves ancient settlements and tombs belonging to the Umm an-Nar culture, dating back to 2500 BCE.

Grand tomb

A restored circular tomb within Hili Archaeological Park dating to the Umm an-Nar period (2500–2000 BCE). The structure features two entrances decorated with relief carvings of oryxes and human figures.
