East Mani Unmissables
East Mani is defined by its austere landscape and defensive architecture. This collection highlights the subterranean lake of the Diros Caves, the abandoned stone tower-houses of Vathia, and the rusted hull of the Dimitrios shipwreck. Historical sites include the medieval Passavas Castle and the archaeological remains of Karyoupolis. The region’s coastline features the sheltered natural harbor of Porto Kagio and the long, sandy stretches of Mavrovouni beach, while Gytheio serves as the primary maritime gateway with its neoclassical waterfront and local markets.
Shipwreck Dimitrios
A 67-meter cargo ship abandoned in 1981, now resting on Valtaki Beach. The rusted hull is easily accessible from the shore.
Porto Kagio
A secluded seaside village and natural harbor near the tip of the Mani Peninsula. It was historically used as a pirate base and naval port.
