Historic Castles and Walls
Rieti’s defensive heritage is defined by its remarkably intact 13th-century medieval walls, which were built upon older Roman foundations to protect the northern approach to the city. This collection highlights significant segments of these limestone fortifications, the Arco di Bonifacio VIII overpass connected to the Bishop's Palace, and the nearby Cesarini's Castle in Rocca Sinibalda. The latter is a Renaissance masterpiece by Baldassarre Peruzzi, noted for its unique zoomorphic architectural plan.
A Arco di Bonifacio VIII
A 13th-century medieval overpass spanning Via Cintia. Also known as the Bishop's Arch, it connects the Palazzo Vescovile to the adjacent gardens and was constructed during the residency of Pope Boniface VIII in Rieti.
B Mura medievali
A well-preserved segment of the northern city walls dating to the 13th century. These fortifications were built on Roman foundations and feature characteristic Guelph merlons and square defensive towers.
C Mura medievali
Western section of Rieti's medieval defensive circuit. This stretch illustrates the 13th-century expansion of the city, utilizing local limestone blocks and strategically placed watchtowers to guard the perimeter.
D Mura medievali
Eastern portion of the medieval fortifications. This section remains largely intact, showcasing the strategic height and masonry techniques used to protect the city during the conflicts between the Papacy and the Empire.
E Mura medievali
Northern segment of the city walls. This part of the fortification system highlights the transition from Roman defensive techniques to medieval military architecture, featuring well-preserved stonework and defensive positions.
F Cesarini's Castle
A 16th-century Renaissance fortress in Rocca Sinibalda. Designed by architect Baldassarre Peruzzi, the structure is famous for its zoomorphic footprint, resembling an eagle or scorpion, integrated into a medieval stronghold.
