Coastal Escapes

This collection features thirteen secluded beaches along Sri Lanka’s rugged southeastern edge, bordering Kumana National Park. Stretching from the surf breaks north of Okanda to the remote river mouth at Kumana, these coastal sites are defined by high sand dunes, brackish lagoons, and proximity to wildlife corridors. The region remains largely undeveloped due to its protected status, offering a landscape of rocky outcrops and seasonal nesting grounds for sea turtles. Access typically requires 4WD vehicles via park tracks.

Kumana Beach

Remote shoreline at the southern edge of Kumana National Park, situated near the mouth of the Kumbukkan Oya river.

Bagura Beach

A secluded coastal stretch within the national park, characterized by expansive sand dunes and occasional sightings of elephants near the shore.

Beach north of Okanda

Located near the Okanda surf point, this area features rocky outcrops and sits adjacent to the historic Okanda Hindu shrine.

Helawa South Beach

Undeveloped beach bordered by the Helawa Lagoon, frequently used as a nesting site for sea turtles.

Girikula Beach

A rugged section of the southeastern coastline featuring low scrub vegetation and natural tidal pools.

Kirigal Ebey North Beach

Isolated beach characterized by large sand dunes, positioned between the Kirigal Ebey and Bagura lagoons.

Kirigal Ebey South Beach

Southern section of the Kirigal Ebey dunes, offering views across the park's coastal plains and the Indian Ocean.

Thummulla Beach

Remote sandy shore situated between the Bagura and Andarakala lagoons within the Kumana National Park boundaries.

Andarakala North Beach

Coastal stretch bordered by dense scrub forest and the northern edge of the Andarakala lagoon.
