Parks and Gardens

Mechelen’s green landscape ranges from formal botanical gardens in the city center to expansive provincial estates and tidal wetlands. This selection features the historic Kruidtuin and the award-winning rose gardens of Vrijbroekpark. Beyond the city, the Zennegat offers a unique ecosystem at the meeting point of three waterways, while Domein Roosendael preserves the heritage of a former Cistercian abbey. These spaces provide diverse environments, including manicured lawns, ancient forests, and marshlands.

Vrijbroekpark

A 50-hectare provincial domain featuring an internationally recognized rose garden with over 1,000 varieties. The park includes a traffic park for children, sports facilities, and a large pond. It is a designated non-smoking area and regional heritage site.

Kruidtuin

The city's largest public park, established in the 19th century as a botanical garden. Located along the river Dijle, it contains a statue of botanist Rembert Dodoens and a diverse collection of trees and shrubs.

Tivolipark

A landscape park surrounding the neoclassical Kasteel Tivoli. The grounds include a children's farm, an educational honey house, and several walking paths through wooded areas and meadows.

Domein Roosendael

A historic estate situated on the site of a 13th-century Cistercian abbey. It features a monumental gatehouse, a neoclassical coach house, and a park landscape shaped by the river Nete.

GGG Zennegat

A nature reserve and controlled flood area located at the confluence of the Dijle, Zenne, and the Leuven-Dijle canal. It is characterized by tidal mudflats, marshes, and unique wetland flora.

Het Broek - Arkenbos

Part of the larger Blaasveldbroek nature area, this site consists of ancient forest and marshland. It serves as a habitat for diverse bird species and features trails through wetlands and wooded sections.

Papenhof

A neighborhood park developed on the site of a historic farmstead. It features a community garden, a fruit orchard with traditional varieties, a pond, and natural play areas for children.
