Best Beaches

Sri Lanka’s southern coastline features a diverse range of coastal environments, from the coral-rich waters of Hikkaduwa to the expansive surfing bays of Weligama and Mirissa. This selection includes the protected horseshoe bay of Unawatuna and the secluded coves of Goyambokka and Silent Beach. Unawatuna

A horseshoe-shaped bay protected by a coral reef. Nearby attractions include the Japanese Peace Pagoda on the Rumassala headland and multiple snorkeling spots within the bay.

Mirissa Beach

Known for Parrot Rock, a red-hued viewpoint accessible during low tide. The area serves as a primary hub for blue whale watching excursions and features consistent surf breaks.

Hikkaduwa Beach

Home to the Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary, a marine national park. The shoreline is characterized by shallow reefs and established surfing points including North Jetty and Benny’s.

Beach

Koggala Beach

An expansive sandy shore known for stilt fishing and turtle hatcheries. The beach borders the Koggala lagoon and is less developed than neighboring coastal towns.

Weligama Beach

A wide, shallow bay with a sandy bottom, primarily used for beginner surfing lessons. The beach is situated near Taprobane Island, a private islet with a colonial-era villa.

Bentota

A broad sand spit situated between the Indian Ocean and the Bentota Ganga. It serves as a center for water sports like windsurfing and jet skiing.

Jungle Beach

A small, secluded bay tucked into the Rumassala forest. Accessible via a jungle path or boat from Galle, it offers calm waters for snorkeling and views of the Galle Fort.
