Hidden Gems of Central Jutland

Central Jutland’s landscape is defined by its glacial history, featuring a mix of expansive heathlands and deep freshwater lakes. This selection includes Tange Sø, Denmark's largest man-made lake, and the historic Kongenshus Mindepark, which commemorates the farmers who cultivated the Jutlandic moors. From the brackish waters of Ørslevkloster Sø to the dramatic hills of Dollerup Bakker, these sites offer insight into the region's natural conservation and agricultural heritage.

Tange Sø

Denmark’s largest artificial lake, created in 1921 to power the Gudenaacentralen hydroelectric plant. It covers approximately 540 hectares near Bjerringbro.

Kongenshus Mindepark

A memorial park dedicated to the pioneers who cultivated the Jutland heath. It features a memorial valley with stones inscribed with the names of local heath farmers.

Søndersø

One of the two prominent lakes in Viborg, offering a 5.7-kilometer perimeter path used for recreation.

Klejtrup Sø

A freshwater lake located southwest of Hobro, known for hosting 'Verdenskortet,' a miniature world map built into the lakeside.

Stanghede

A protected 100-hectare heathland area situated west of Hald Sø. It preserves the original moorland landscape characteristic of Central Jutland.

Dollerup Bakker

A glacial landscape featuring steep hills and deep valleys formed during the last ice age, overlooking the southern end of Hald Sø.

Ørslevkloster Sø

A brackish water lake located near the northern part of Hjarbæk Fjord, situated in the Skive municipality.

Snæbum Sø

A small lake enclosed by the village of Snæbum, with the local parish church positioned at its southwestern edge.

Vintmølle Sø

A small, privately owned lake south of Viborg. It is dammed at the southern end by the historic Vintmølle water mill.
