Historic Sites

This collection features significant historical landmarks across the Wadden Sea region, spanning from the Bronze Age to the 19th century. It includes the Riberhus royal castle ruins and the house of Maren Splids in Ribe, Denmark's oldest town. The list also highlights the 1858 cast-iron Leuchtturm List Ost on Sylt, unique 18th-century whalebone fences on Rømø, and ancient burial mounds like Køllehøj and Marebæk Høj near Esbjerg.

Riberhus

Riberhus was a royal castle situated on the western outskirts of Ribe, Esbjerg Municipality, Denmark.

Leuchtturm List Ost

A cast-iron lighthouse built in 1858 on the northern tip of Sylt. Standing 13 meters tall, it remains an active navigational aid marking the entrance to the Lister Tief.

Markmandshuset

A historic field warden's cottage in the Vester Vedsted marshlands. These structures were traditionally used by watchmen to monitor grazing cattle and manage the tidal gates of the Wadden Sea.

Hvalbenshegn

A heritage fence in Juvre on Rømø constructed from the jawbones of bowhead whales. These bones were brought back by local whalers during the 18th century when timber was scarce on the island.

Gærpigen

A bronze statue by sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, located near the Riberhus castle bank. It commemorates a local folk figure and is a notable example of early 20th-century Danish sculpture.

Maren Splids Hus

The former home of Maren Splids, Denmark's most famous victim of the 17th-century witch trials. A commemorative plaque marks the site where she lived before her execution in 1641.

Køllehøj

A prominent Bronze Age burial mound situated in the Marbæk area near Esbjerg. It is part of a larger complex of ancient tumuli overlooking the Wadden Sea.

Marebæk Høj

An archaeological site featuring a prehistoric burial mound. Located within the Marbæk plantation, it provides evidence of early human settlement and ritual activity in the coastal landscape.
