Ancient Wonders of Petra
Petra, the Nabataean capital carved into rose-red sandstone, showcases a blend of Hellenistic, Roman, and native architectural styles. This collection features the iconic Al-Khazneh Treasury and the massive first-century Nabataean Theater. Explore funerary architecture through the vibrant Silk Tomb and the multi-story Urn Tomb, or walk the Roman-era Colonnaded Street. Beyond the central valley, the High Place of Sacrifice provides well-preserved open-air altars, while the 12th-century Wu'ayra Castle represents the later Crusader presence north of the main city entrance.
The Theater
Petra Theater is a first century AD Nabataean theatre situated 600 m from the centre of Petra.
Roman Soldier's Tomb
The tomb is named after the statue of a soldier wearing Roman clothes. It dates back to the 2nd century.
Sextius Florentinus Tomb
Built at the time of Sextus Florentinos, the governor of the Arab state. There are remains of columns and statues left.
Colonnaded Street (Cardo Maximus)
Although the former main street is badly damaged, it is partially preserved. Its remains are about half a kilometre long.
Lion Monument
A fountain in the shape of a lion carved into sandstone. Unfortunately the head is missing now, but you can see where the water once flowed.
