Zakarpattia Oblast Essentials

Zakarpattia Oblast features a diverse landscape ranging from the 2,061-meter summit of Mount Hoverla to the ancient wine cellars of Seredne. This selection includes the 17th-century wooden architecture of St. Nicholas Church, the ruins of the 11th-century Khust Castle, and the glacial waters of Lake Nesamovyte. The region is also home to the 36-meter Trufanets waterfall and the Museum of Mountain Ecology in Rakhiv, which documents the unique biodiversity and cultural history of the Ukrainian Carpathians.

Hoverla

Mount Hoverla, at 2,061 metres, is the highest mountain in Ukraine and part of the Ukrainian Carpathians.

Trufanets waterfall

Located on the southeastern slopes of the Svydovets massif, this 36-meter-high waterfall is the highest natural cascade in Zakarpattia. It is situated directly by the H-09 highway between Yasinya and Kvasy.

Serednanski vinni pidvali

These 16th-century wine cellars were originally carved into volcanic rock by captured Ottoman soldiers. Stretching over 4.5 kilometers, they remain the oldest and largest winemaking center in the region.

Khust castle

The Khust Castle is an abandoned castle located in the city of Khust in Zakarpattia Oblast in western Ukraine.

Assumption Cathedral

A Greek Catholic co-cathedral in Mukachevo featuring neoclassical architecture. It serves as a major spiritual center for the Mukachevo Eparchy.

Nesamovyte

A high-altitude glacial lake located at 1,750 meters in the Chornohora range. It is known for its crystal-clear water and surrounding alpine meadows.

A 17th-century wooden church in Chornoholova, recognized as an architectural monument of national importance. It represents the Lemko style of wooden ecclesiastical architecture.

Museum of Mountain Ecology and History of Nature Use in the Ukrainian Carpathians

Part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve in Rakhiv, this museum features exhibits on Carpathian flora, fauna, and the traditional land-use history of the Hutsul people.

Blue Lagoon

A natural pool on the Lyutyanka River near the village of Chornoholova. It is known for its distinct turquoise water color caused by the river's depth and mineral composition.
