The Sete Cidades Massif is a stratovolcanic complex characterized by a massive nested caldera containing several lakes and volcanic cones. The landscape is defined by two primary crater lakes, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, which sit within unique geomorphological structures resulting from a complex eruptive history. The area also encompasses a civil parish located within the crater.
The Complexo Ambiental da Lagoa das Sete Cidades functions as a visitor support house and shop within the local Natural Park. This facility provides information regarding the protected area's geology, local heritage, and walking trails, while also hosting educational activities.
The Mata do Canário – Sete Cidades (PR04SMI) is a linear hiking trail that traverses the area. This route passes through volcanic formations and historical aqueducts, providing views of the crater, the internal lakes, and the coastline. The massif is a significant geological site and a designated protected area.
