Located next to the Salzach River, the Old Town of Salzburg is a living reminder of the city's medieval glory and the oldest part of the city still preserved today. It has been inscripted into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list since 1996.
It would be difficult to miss the majestic Hohensalzburg Castle towering above, but that is by no means all the Old Town has to offer. The Altstadt–as the locals call it–is unique by its atmosphere, with its cobblestone-lined streets and old houses built in the Baroque architectural style and its quaint small shops and stores.
As usual in Austria, the shops, as well as many other attractions in Salzburg, are all closed on Sundays and holidays. However, you may expect some souvenir stores, as well as churches and museums to remain open. Also, if you choose to come by car, there are public parking lots available within 5 minutes walking distance from the Old Town.
