Museums & Heritage

Brașov County's history is preserved through a network of medieval fortifications and specialized museums. This collection features the iconic Bran Castle and Râșnov Citadel alongside the UNESCO-listed Prejmer Fortress and Viscri’s fortified church. Cultural highlights include "The First Romanian School" in Șchei, the Museum of Memories from Communism, and the Weavers' Bastion, which houses a scale model of 17th-century Brașov. Bran Castle

Bran Castle is a historic fortress in Transylvania, Romania, renowned for its association with the Dracula legend. It serves as a museum displaying art, furniture collected by Queen Marie, and medieval artifacts, attracting visitors interested in history, architecture, and local culture.

Râșnov Citadel

Râșnov Fortress is a well-preserved fortified complex located on the limestone hill of Râșnov, Brașov, and is one of the best-preserved fortified ensembles in Transylvania. It offers visitors the chance to explore the walls, a feudal art museum, historical artifacts, and recreational activities inside the fortress.

Weavers' Bastion

Located in the southwest corner of Brașov's fortress, this 15th-century structure houses a detailed 1:100 scale model of the city as it appeared in 1896. The museum also displays medieval weaponry, guild artifacts, and historical documents.

"Valer Literat" Museum of Fagaras Land

Housed within the 14th-century Făgăraș Fortress, this museum showcases the heritage of the Făgăraș region. Exhibits include traditional costumes, Saxon ceramics, religious icons on glass, and artifacts documenting the castle's history as a princely residence and a former prison.

"The First Romanian School" Museum

Situated in the yard of St. Nicholas Church, this museum preserves the building where the first Romanian language classes were held in 1583. It houses over 4,000 rare books, including the first Romanian Bible and early printed works by Deacon Coresi.

"Prejmer" Fortress

A UNESCO World Heritage site, this 13th-century Teutonic Knight foundation is the strongest fortified church in Transylvania. Its circular walls contain 272 individual rooms designed to shelter the local population and their livestock during enemy sieges.

Museum Collection of the Fortified Church in Viscri

Located within a UNESCO-listed 12th-century Saxon fortified church, this collection displays traditional furniture, hand-woven textiles, and agricultural tools. The museum provides insight into the daily life, customs, and craftsmanship of the Transylvanian Saxon community.

Muzeul Amintirilor din Comunism

This museum explores daily life in Romania under the communist regime through personal stories and donated objects. Exhibits cover school life, home decor, and the scarcity of consumer goods, offering a social perspective on the era's propaganda and restrictions.

County History Museum

Located in the former Council House at the center of Brașov, this museum tracks the region's history from prehistoric times to the modern era. Key exhibits include archaeological finds, medieval guild documents, and displays on the city's urban development.

"Muresianu's House" Museum

Dedicated to the family who founded Transylvania's first political newspaper, this museum is set in their former residence. It houses archives, furniture, and personal items documenting the cultural and political life of 19th-century Brașov.

Izvorul Părintelui Arsenie Boca

A spiritual memorial site located near Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery, featuring a natural spring named after the influential Romanian Orthodox monk Arsenie Boca. It serves as a significant pilgrimage destination at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains.

Centrul de vizitare al Parcului Național Piatra Craiului

This visitor center features interactive displays about the flora, fauna, and geology of the Piatra Craiului Mountains. It includes a 3D map of the massif, information on local biodiversity, and exhibits on traditional mountain sheepfolds.
