Castles and Ruins
Tata’s architectural landscape is defined by its proximity to Lake Öreg and the English Garden. This collection features the 14th-century Tata Castle, once a royal residence, and the neighboring 18th-century Baroque Esterházy Palace. The list also includes the romantic structures of the English Garden, such as the late Baroque Kiskastély and the artificial ruins constructed from genuine Roman stones and medieval church fragments. These sites represent the transition from medieval fortification to aristocratic leisure and landscape design.
Tata Castle
Tata Castle, built at the mid 14th-century on the northern tip of Lake Öreg, is one of the jewels of Tata, Hungary.
Esterházy-kastély
Baroque palace built between 1765 and 1769 according to plans by Jakab Fellner. Located on the shores of Lake Öreg, it features a preserved interior and historically served as the seat of the Esterházy family in Tata.
Műromok
Artificial ruins designed by Charles Moreau in 1801 within the English Garden. The structure incorporates authentic 12th-century Romanesque columns from the Vértesszentkereszt abbey and Roman-era gravestones.
Kiskastély
Late Baroque summer villa located in the English Garden, built in 1784. It originally served as a leisure residence for the Esterházy family and features Zopf-style architectural elements.
Kristály fürdő
Historic bath house ruins located within the English Garden. The site reflects Tata's heritage as a spa town, historically utilizing the area's natural spring waters.
