Orthodox Christian Sites

Zakynthos features a collection of Orthodox Christian sites that reflect the island's Venetian influence and resilience against seismic activity. This list includes the Renaissance-style Saint Nikolaos on the Mole, the only Venetian building in the capital to survive the 1953 earthquake. Other highlights include Panagia Scopiotissa, built on the ruins of an ancient temple, and the monastery of Saint George of the Cliffs. These churches and monasteries showcase traditional Ionian architecture, intricate wood-carved iconostases, and historic stone bell towers.

Saint Nikolaos on the Mole

You wouldn't say this building was damaged by several earthquakes. A beautiful Renaissance church situated by the sea.

Panagia Scopiotissa

Located atop Mount Skopos, this 15th-century church was built on the site of the ancient Temple of Artemis. It features a cross-in-square design and remains of frescoes, offering panoramic views of the island.

Saint George Monastery

A 16th-century monastery situated near the cliffs of northwestern Zakynthos. The complex includes a defensive circular tower built to protect the monks from pirate raids and a small church with post-Byzantine icons.

Panagia ton Aggelon

A traditional stone chapel located in the rural interior of the island, reflecting local religious architecture.

Church - Pantokratoras

Located in the village of Koiliomenos, this church is renowned for its unique 19th-century bell tower, which features detailed stone carvings and a distinctive architectural style blending local and Venetian elements.

Church of Iperagias Theotokou Faneromenis

An important pilgrimage site in Macherado, known for its 14th-century icon and impressive wood-carved interior. The structure was carefully rebuilt following a fire in 2005 to preserve its historical character.

Chapel of Agios Nikolaos

A small, whitewashed chapel situated on a rocky promontory at the edge of the sea in Vasilikos. It is a classic example of simple Greek island religious architecture.
