Česká Lípa

Cittadina · 🇨🇿 Cechia

Česká Lípa is the main town of a green, sandstone-rich corner of northern Bohemia. Its compact historic centre sits on the Ploučnice river, with a restored medieval water castle, a large Baroque monastery and several old churches within a short walk of each other.

Most visitors use the town as a practical base. Within half an hour you can reach sandstone rock towns, lakes for swimming, glassmaking villages and hilltop castles. The town suits a relaxed weekend or a short active holiday rather than a long city break. The region was mostly German-speaking until 1945, and the old German name Böhmisch Leipa still appears on maps and plaques.

Quando andare

Late spring to early autumn is the best time, with mild days that suit walks and trips to nearby lakes and rock towns. July and August are the warmest months, but they also bring frequent showers. Winters are cold and grey, and many regional sights close or keep short hours from November to March.

The biggest annual event is Lípa Musica, an international classical music festival. Most concerts take place from mid-September to early November, often in historic churches and the former monastery.

Attrazioni principali

The historic sights of Česká Lípa sit close together in and around the old town, so you can see most of them in one day.

  • Lipý is a Gothic water castle first recorded in 1277. It was restored after decades of ruin and now has a courtyard, medieval cellars and a small exhibition in the tower.
  • Next to the castle, Červený dům is a Renaissance summer house from 1583. Its red walls with white sgraffito decoration make it one of the most striking buildings in town.
  • Všech svatých is the church of the former Augustinian monastery founded by Albrecht von Wallenstein. Today it is a minor basilica and a popular concert venue.
  • Vlastivědné muzeum a galerie occupies the rest of the monastery. It covers regional history, nature and archaeology, and includes a Loreto chapel and a quiet monastery garden.
  • Archeologické muzeum Šatlava v České Lípě is a small museum in the former town jail. It focuses on cave archaeology and the history of prisons.
  • Povýšení svatého Kříže is a Gothic parish church from the 14th century, later changed in a neo-Gothic style.
  • Narození Panny Marie is a Baroque church with Gothic origins. Its shady park contains an Empire-style family tomb.
  • svatá Máří Magdalena is one of the oldest church sites in town, founded in the 13th century and later rebuilt in Baroque style.
  • Poklopový most is an early 20th-century movable weir on the Ploučnice river that now serves as a footbridge.
  • Špičák is a basalt hill at the northern edge of town with a nature trail. The old lookout tower on the top is closed to visitors.

Cosa provare

Česká Lípa is a good place to combine culture with time outdoors.

  • Attend a Lípa Musica concert in autumn. Many concerts take place in the basilica and other historic buildings.
  • Catch a summer concert, theatre show or market in the courtyard of Lipý.
  • Paddle the Ploučnice river by canoe. It is a slow, winding river that suits beginners, and rental companies operate in the area in summer.
  • Walk the nature trail up Špičák in the evening for views over the town and the surrounding hills.
  • On a rainy day, go to Aquapark, an indoor pool complex with water slides and a whirlpool.

  • By bus: Direct buses from Prague (Střížkov stop) take about 1.5 hours and are usually the fastest public transport option. Buses also link the town with Liberec and other towns in the region.
  • By train: Česká Lípa is a railway junction, with lines to Liberec, Děčín and Mladá Boleslav. Trains from Prague usually need one change and take about 2 to 2.5 hours. Check times with České dráhy.
  • By car: The town lies on the main road from Prague towards the German border, about 70 km from the capital.

Come muoversi

  • On foot: The historic centre is compact and flat. You can walk between all the main sights in 10–15 minutes.
  • City buses: A small city bus network connects the centre, the railway station and the housing estates. You can pay on board with a contactless bank card, which is cheaper than paying cash to the driver. Timetables and fares are on the IDOL regional transport site.
  • Regional transport: Regional buses and trains within the Liberec Region use the same IDOL tariff, which makes day trips without a car easy.
  • Cycling: The surrounding countryside has good marked cycle routes, but the town itself has few dedicated bike lanes.

Guidare

  • Is a car worth it? You do not need a car in town. A car is very useful for exploring the rock towns, castles and lakes in the region, although buses and trains reach the main ones.
  • Parking: There are paid car parks and paid street zones around the historic centre. Pay at the machines or by app, and check the signs for time limits.
  • Restrictions: Some streets in the old town are pedestrian-only or limited to residents.

Sicurezza e salute

Česká Lípa is a safe town for visitors. Petty crime is rare, but keep an eye on your belongings at the railway and bus stations. The main risks are outdoors: sandstone paths can be slippery after rain, so wear good shoes on rock trails and follow the marked routes. Ticks are common in the forests from spring to autumn, so check your skin after hikes. Tap water is safe to drink.

Storia

Česká Lípa is first mentioned in writing in 1263. The powerful Ronovci family built Lipý on an island between arms of the Ploučnice river, and a town grew next to it in the early 14th century. The Berka of Dubá family later owned the estate and added the Renaissance Červený dům in 1583.

In 1627 Albrecht von Wallenstein, a famous general of the Thirty Years' War, founded the Augustinian monastery. Its church, Všech svatých, and the monastery buildings still dominate the western part of the old town. For centuries, most of the population spoke German. After 1945 the German inhabitants were expelled, and the town was resettled by Czechs.

In the second half of the 20th century, large housing estates were built for workers of the nearby uranium mines and industry. The castle was partly demolished in 1957 and restored from 1992. It opened to visitors again in 2003.
