Iconic Lighthouses of Gotland

Gotland’s maritime history is defined by its strategic Baltic location, marked by these historic beacons. This collection features 19th-century structures ranging from the southern tip at Hoburg to the northern reaches of Fårö. Highlights include the high-altitude station on Stora Karlsö, the striped tower of När on its distinct peninsula, and the long-standing maritime sentinels at Faludden and Östergarnsholm. These lighthouses illustrate the evolution of Swedish navigational technology from the mid-1800s to the present day.

Hoburg fyr

Located on the southernmost tip of Gotland at Hoburgen, this lighthouse was first lit on October 1, 1846. It serves as a vital navigational aid for maritime traffic between mainland Sweden and the Baltic States.

Fårö fyr

Constructed between 1846 and 1847, this 30-meter-tall white stone tower stands on the northeastern tip of Fårö island. It was automated in 1953 and remains an active maritime signal.

Built in 1872 on the Närsholmen peninsula, this lighthouse is distinguished by its red and white horizontal stripes. The surrounding area is a protected nature reserve known for its unique, open landscape.

Faluddens fyr

A historic lighthouse on the southeastern coast of Gotland, established in 1867. The station was decommissioned in 2007 but remains a significant landmark of the region's 19th-century maritime infrastructure.

Östergarn

Located on the island of Östergarnsholm, this site features a lighthouse station dating back to 1817. The current operational concrete tower was built in 1919 to replace the original coal-fired beacon.

Stora Karlsö

Established in 1887 on the cliffs of Stora Karlsö, this is the highest situated lighthouse in Sweden. It sits 56 meters above sea level on a prominent bird sanctuary island.
