Guayaquil’s green spaces range from urban boardwalks to expansive ecological reserves. This selection includes the historic Parque Seminario, known for its resident land iguanas, and the modern Malecón del Salado boardwalk. Beyond the city center, the list covers the massive sports complexes of Parque de los Samanes and the protected mangrove ecosystems of Isla de La Campana and Isla Matorrillos, which provide critical habitats for coastal bird species and local wildlife.
Malecón del Salado
A riverside boardwalk along the Estero Salado featuring dancing fountains, boat rentals, and open-air plazas. Built in 2009, it connects the city's central university district to various cultural spaces and seafood restaurants.
Parque Seminario
Also known as Iguana Park, this historic square sits in front of the Guayaquil Metropolitan Cathedral. It is famous for dozens of green iguanas that roam the grounds and trees, alongside a central monument to Simón Bolívar.
Parque de los Samanes
One of the largest urban parks in South America, featuring extensive sports facilities, including 50 multipurpose courts, a lagoon, and specialized tracks for cycling and running.
Garita del Parque Lago
The primary entrance to a man-made reservoir and recreational area. The site provides access for non-motorized water sports such as kayaking and rowing, as well as designated paths for cycling and picnics.
Parque Ecológico San Gerónimo
A conservation area focused on the protection of the tropical dry forest ecosystem. It offers nature trails for hiking and birdwatching near the Chongón-Colonche mountain range.
Isla de La Campana
A wetland island located within the Gulf of Guayaquil. It is characterized by dense mangrove forests that serve as a nesting site for various coastal bird species.
Isla Matorrillos
A protected mangrove island and wetland area in the Guayas estuary. It provides a critical habitat for local marine life and is a key location for observing traditional crab harvesting.
Cornelio Vernaza
A traditional urban park in central Guayaquil, named after the Ecuadorian military figure. It serves as a local green space within the city’s historic grid.
