Jeju's Volcanic Peaks & Rocks

Jeju Island's landscape is defined by its volcanic history, featuring over 300 parasitic cones known as oreum and unique coastal formations. This collection highlights the island's geological heritage, from the hexagonal basalt columns of Jusangjeolli to the massive trachytic dome of Sanbangsan. These sites showcase diverse structures including tuff rings, lava domes, and craters, providing insight into the phreatomagmatic eruptions that shaped the island's topography.

Sanbangsan

A 395-meter trachytic lava dome featuring the Sanbang-gulsa cave temple. It offers views of the southern coast and contains a unique ecosystem of cliff-dwelling plants.

Oedolgae

An isolated 20-meter basalt pillar formed 1.5 million years ago. Located on the Seyeon-gyo coast, it is a prominent example of sea stack erosion.

Jusangjeolli

These hexagonal basalt columns along the Daepo coast formed when thick lava flows from Hallasan cooled rapidly upon reaching the ocean.

Saebyeol-Oreum

A prominent parasitic cone in western Jeju, recognizable by its steep slopes covered in silver grass. It serves as the primary site for the annual Jeju Fire Festival.

Suwolbong(nokkomul-oleum)

A coastal tuff ring and Global Geopark site. Its exposed cliffs reveal distinct sedimentary layers formed by volcanic ash and debris during hydrovolcanic eruptions.

Geum-Oreum

A volcanic cone featuring a deep, circular crater that occasionally holds a seasonal rain-fed pond. The summit provides views of Jeju’s western coastline.

Dangsan-bong

A coastal volcanic cone formed by underwater eruptions. The peak offers views of Chagwido Island and the stratified ash layers of the nearby Suwolbong cliffs.

Noknam Peak

A small parasitic cone in the Daejeong area, known for its quiet forest trails and surrounding agricultural fields.

Dondumi Peak

A low-lying volcanic cone located near the southwestern coast, offering a gentle climb through local shrubland and vegetation.

Handae-Oreum

Situated in the upland regions, this peak is characterized by dense forest cover and its proximity to the Hallasan National Park boundary.

Keun-noggomae-Oreum

One of Jeju's taller parasitic cones, featuring twin peaks and a steep ascent. The summit provides panoramic views of Hallasan and surrounding oreum clusters.

Jogeun-noggomae-Oreum

The smaller companion to Keun-noggomae, this peak is connected by a ridge trail and is covered in thick deciduous and evergreen forests.

Ancheoni-Oreum

A forested volcanic cone located in the Aewol highlands, part of a cluster of peaks historically used for cattle grazing.

Geomundeulmeok-Oreum

A lesser-known parasitic cone situated near the Noggomae range, offering a secluded environment for observing local volcanic flora.

Keun-barimae-Oreum

Named for its resemblance to a brass bowl, this cone features a large, deep crater and a hiking trail through cedar groves.

Dolaeoleum

A small volcanic peak in the western interior, contributing to the dense concentration of parasitic cones in the Aewol region.

Gwetmul-Oreum

Known for its wide grassy plateau and historical use as a grazing site, this peak connects to several forest trails near the Sangga-ri ranch.

Jogeun-barimae

The smaller counterpart to Keun-barimae, featuring a shallower crater and dense forest vegetation common to Jeju's mid-mountain region.

Minmeoru-Oreum

A volcanic cone located in the island's interior, characterized by its rounded shape and typical oreum shrubland.

Samhyeongjesaes-oleumnamjjog1
