Historic Castles and Forts

A Fort of St John
Perched 280 meters above Kotor, this fortification features a series of ramparts, gates, and the Church of Our Lady of Remedy. The current structures date primarily to the Venetian period between the 15th and 19th centuries.
B Citadela
Located in Budva's Old Town, this medieval fortress includes the remains of the 12th-century Santa Maria de Castello church, a library, and barracks built by the Austrian Empire in the 19th century.
C Forte Mare Forte Mare
A 14th-century sea fortress in Herceg Novi originally built by Bosnian King Tvrtko I. It was later expanded by the Turks and Venetians, featuring massive stone walls overlooking the entrance to Boka Bay.
D Castello
A Venetian fortress located on a rocky cliff at the northern end of Petrovac. It historically served as a military outpost and a storehouse for wine and olive oil.
E Kanli Kula Kanli Kula
An Ottoman-era fortress in Herceg Novi dating to the 16th century. Historically used as a prison, its name translates to 'Bloody Tower,' and it now serves as a large open-air amphitheater.
F Dvorac Kralja Nikole
Built in 1891, this former royal residence in Podgorica served as the palace for King Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš. It now houses a contemporary art center and is surrounded by a public park.
G Lesendro
Lesendro is an island and a fortress in Skadar Lake in Montenegro. It is located near the small town of Vranjina.
H Fortress Old Bar
A sprawling archaeological site featuring ruins of over 600 structures, including Byzantine fortifications, Venetian palaces, and a 17th-century Ottoman aqueduct, abandoned after a gunpowder explosion in 1878.

A 6.8-meter-tall bronze statue in Podgorica honoring Petar I Petrović-Njegoš, the 18th-century ruler and saint who unified Montenegrin tribes and established a code of laws.
