Historic Churches of Olinda

Olinda’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is defined by its 16th and 17th-century religious architecture. This collection features Baroque landmarks like the Mosteiro de São Bento, famous for its gilded altars, and the Convento de São Francisco, the oldest Franciscan foundation in Brazil. These sites document the city’s colonial evolution, showcasing intricate Portuguese tilework, ornate wood carvings, and reconstruction efforts following the 1631 Dutch invasion. Many of these churches occupy hilltop positions, providing strategic views over the Atlantic coast.

Convento São Bento

Benedictine monastery established in 1586. The main church features a massive gold-leaf high altar, a masterpiece of Brazilian Baroque art, and detailed cedar carvings.

Convento e Igreja de São Francisco

Established in 1585 as the first Franciscan convent in Brazil. It contains the Chapel of Saint Anne and extensive 18th-century Portuguese tile panels depicting the life of Saint Francis.

Igreja do Carmo

Built around 1580, this is the oldest Carmelite church in Brazil. It underwent significant restoration after being damaged during the Dutch occupation and features a prominent Baroque facade.

Igreja da Misericórdia

Founded in 1540, this church features a high altar with gilded carvings in the D. João V style and Portuguese tiles illustrating the life of the Virgin Mary.

Igreja Nossa Senhora dos Milagres

Built in the 18th century on the site of a former 16th-century chapel. It is a smaller church known for its traditional colonial lines and local religious significance.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Graças

Part of the Olinda Seminary, this 16th-century Jesuit church is one of the few remaining examples of Mannerist architecture in Brazil, featuring a simple facade and historic stone carvings.

Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Conceição

A 16th-century church originally used as a parish for the local elite. It was rebuilt in the 18th century and currently serves as a convent for the Miraculous Medal sisters.

Igreja Nossa Senhora do Monte

Dating back to 1535, this is one of Brazil's oldest churches. It is currently maintained by Benedictine nuns and retains a simple, austere colonial appearance.

Igreja Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe

Established in the 17th century, this church was historically associated with the local Black community and brotherhoods. It features a traditional colonial facade.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Boa Hora

A small 19th-century church built on the site of a former chapel. It features a modest facade and is located within the historic center’s residential grid.

Igreja de São José dos Pescadores

A small 18th-century chapel dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen, reflecting the maritime heritage of Olinda’s coastal community.

Santuário Mãe Rainha

A modern Catholic shrine belonging to the Schoenstatt movement. Located on a hill, it offers panoramic views of Olinda and Recife and serves as a site for pilgrimage.
