Saaremaa Essentials

Saaremaa’s landscape is defined by its medieval heritage and unique geological features. This selection includes the 14th-century Kuressaare Episcopal Castle and the ancient meteorite craters at Kaali. Coastal landmarks range from the 21-meter-high Panga cliffs to the Sõrve and Kiipsaare lighthouses. The island’s cultural history is preserved through the wooden trestle mills at Angla, the historic churches of Valjala and Pöide, and the regional exhibits within the Saaremaa Museum.

Kuressaare Castle

Kuressaare Castle, also Kuressaare Episcopal Castle, is a castle in Kuressaare on Saaremaa island, in western Estonia.

Panga Pank

The highest cliff in Saaremaa reaches 21 meters. This Silurian limestone escarpment stretches for 2.5 kilometers along the coast and was historically used as an ancient sacrificial site.

Kaali järv

A circular lake located within the largest of nine meteorite craters in the Kaali field. Formed several millennia ago, the main crater measures 110 meters in diameter.

Angla windmill hill

A historic site featuring five windmills, including four traditional Estonian trestle mills and one Dutch-style mill. The complex includes a heritage center showcasing local folk crafts.

Sõrve tuletorn

Located at the tip of the Sõrve Peninsula, this 52-meter-tall concrete lighthouse was built in 1960 to guide ships through the Irbe Strait.
