Saint Vincent e Grenadine

English is the official language and is spoken everywhere, including on the outer islands, so navigation and ordering food pose no difficulty. Day to day, most Vincentians speak Vincentian Creole English among themselves — visitors won't need it, but recognizing a few local expressions is a nice icebreaker.

Prepaid SIM cards from Digicel or FLOW are sold at the airport and in Kingstown, and cover the mainland and the larger Grenadine islands well. Coverage gets patchy on the smaller cays and while sailing between islands, so do not rely on a constant signal once you head into the southern Grenadines.

Tap water quality is inconsistent across the islands, so most visitors stick to bottled or filtered water, especially in the smaller Grenadines. Pharmacies are found in Kingstown and on the larger islands, but are scarce on the smaller cays, so bring any regular medication with you. Mosquitoes here can carry dengue and Zika, so use repellent, particularly around dawn and dusk. Keep routine vaccinations up to date; a yellow fever certificate is required only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk.

Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, the EU and most Commonwealth countries can enter Saint Vincent and the Grenadines without a visa for tourism, typically granted an initial stay of several months on arrival, which can be extended through the Immigration Department in Kingstown. CARICOM nationals may stay longer still. All visitors need a passport valid well beyond their stay, an onward or return ticket, and proof of accommodation and sufficient funds. Travelers from countries without a visa-free arrangement should apply in advance through a Saint Vincent embassy or consulate.

Vincentians are generally relaxed and friendly, but greet people with a simple hello before asking a question or for help — walking straight into a request is considered abrupt. Beachwear belongs on the beach: cover up with a shirt or wrap when walking through Kingstown or visiting shops, churches or government buildings. Ask before photographing people, especially in villages and at the fish and produce markets. Camouflage-patterned clothing is restricted for civilians by law, so leave it out of your suitcase.

Public holidays close banks, government offices and many shops for the day, though hotels and tourist-facing restaurants usually stay open. Vincy Mas, the national carnival, is the country's biggest celebration and can affect transport and business hours on Saint Vincent for several days — check the current calendar before you travel.

Most shops keep standard weekday hours and close early or entirely on Sundays; on the smaller Grenadine islands, opening hours are more relaxed and vary by owner.

• By ferry: the main way to island-hop. Daily fast ferries connect Kingstown and Bequia in under an hour; slower, less frequent boats run south to Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island, sometimes only two or three times a week.
• By air: short inter-island flights connect Argyle International Airport on the mainland with airstrips on Union Island, Canouan and Mustique — useful for the southern Grenadines, where ferries are infrequent.
• By bus: privately run minibuses, often brightly painted, link towns along the mainland's coast roads cheaply. Flag one down anywhere along its route.
• By taxi: fares are unmetered but fixed by the government; confirm the price with the driver before you set off.

Breakfast is often hearty and savory rather than sweet — saltfish with bakes (fried dough), or buljol, a cold salad of shredded saltfish, tomato, onion and pepper, are common starts to the day. Lunch is the main meal for many Vincentians, built around ground provisions like breadfruit, dasheen and sweet potato alongside fish, chicken or callaloo soup, a thick stew of local greens and coconut milk. The national dish, roast breadfruit with fried jackfish, sums up the everyday diet: starchy home-grown produce paired with the day's catch.

Street food and market stalls sell rotis, fried fish and banana fritters, and Kingstown's Friday and Saturday produce market is worth a look even if you're not buying. Saint Vincent is also one of the last places in the world still growing arrowroot commercially, a starchy root once central to the local economy, and it turns up in the local madongo dumplings.

Hairoun, the local lager, is brewed on Saint Vincent and found everywhere; rum is the spirit of choice, with local brands like Sunset Rum sold in strengths from mild to very strong. Fresh juices made from local fruit are widely available and a good alternative to bottled soft drinks.

Most visitors split their time between the volcanic mainland and the scattered islands to the south.

Saint Vincent, the mainland, holds the capital Kingstown, the trailhead for the hike up La Soufrière, and most of the country's rainforest and waterfalls.

The Grenadines begin with Bequia, a short ferry ride from Kingstown and popular with sailors for its harbor and beaches. Further south, Canouan and Mustique offer quieter, more upscale stays, while Union Island and Mayreau are the gateways to the Tobago Cays Marine Park, a protected cluster of uninhabited cays with some of the clearest water in the Caribbean.
