Southland’s rugged landscapes offer diverse outdoor accommodation, from coastal campsites at Monkey Island and Curio Bay to remote backcountry huts along the Kepler, Rakiura, and Hollyford Tracks. These sites provide access to ancient fossil forests, glacial lakes, and dense beech wilderness. While wilderness huts often feature open fireplaces and basic latrines, holiday parks in Te Anau and Manapouri provide full amenities including power supplies and laundry facilities for those exploring Fiordland and Stewart Island.
A Monkey Island
Beachfront camping area located on the South Coast near Orepuki. Accessible at low tide, the site offers views across Te Waewae Bay toward the Takitimu Mountains.
B Luxmore Hut
A Great Walk hut on the Kepler Track situated at 1,085 meters. It features 54 bunks, heating, and views of Lake Te Anau and the Murchison Mountains.
Te Anau Great Lakes Holiday Park

Mavora Lake DoC camping

North Arm Hut
A Great Walk hut on the Rakiura Track, Stewart Island. Situated in podocarp forest overlooking Paterson Inlet, it includes 24 bunks and a wood-burning fireplace.
Lake Alabaster Hut
Backcountry hut on the Hollyford Track featuring 26 bunks. It is situated near the junction where the Pyke River enters Lake Alabaster.
Demon Trail Hut
Remote 12-bunk hut located along the rugged Demon Trail section of the Hollyford Track, overlooking Lake McKerrow.
Hokuri Hut
