Religious Heritage

Acre’s Old City preserves a dense concentration of religious sites reflecting its Ottoman, Crusader, and modern history. The skyline is dominated by the green dome of the 18th-century Al Jazzar Mosque, while hidden within the alleys are the Or Torah Synagogue with its intricate mosaics and the 18th-century Al-Muallaq Mosque built atop Crusader ruins. These sites, alongside Greek Orthodox churches and historic synagogues, illustrate the city's role as a spiritual crossroads for Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities.

Built in 1704 on the foundations of a Crusader church, this Ottoman-era mosque is known as the "Sand Mosque." It features a distinctive square minaret and serves as a central place of worship within the Old City's market area.

Ramchal Synagogue

This historic synagogue is named after the 18th-century Italian kabbalist and philosopher Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto. The current building was established after the original site was confiscated to build the Al-Muallaq Mosque, preserving the Jewish community's presence in the Old City.

Church of Saint Andrew

An 18th-century Greek Catholic (Melkite) church built upon the ruins of a 12th-century Crusader structure. Situated near the city's southwestern walls, the interior features an ornate wooden iconostasis and serves the local Christian community.
