Assos Essentials
Assos, also known as Behramkale, is a significant archaeological site on the Aegean coast. This selection highlights the city's architectural evolution, from the 6th-century BC Doric Temple of Athena on the Acropolis to the 14th-century Murathüdavendigar Mosque. The list includes the well-preserved Greek theatre, the civic buildings of the agora like the Stoa and Vouleftirio, and the ancient fortifications that once housed Aristotle’s school of philosophy.
Assos
Assos was an ancient Greek city near today's Behramkale or Behram for short, which most people still call by its ancient name of Assos.
Temple of Athena
This mystical temple dedicated to Athena is a prime landmark of the area. Built in the 6th century BC.
Akropolis
The highest point of the ancient city, housing the remains of the Temple of Athena. It provides panoramic views of the Gulf of Edremit and the nearby island of Lesbos.
Behramkale Köyü Murathüdavendigar Cami
A 14th-century Ottoman mosque built during the reign of Sultan Murad I. It features a square plan and incorporates repurposed stones from the ancient Greek ruins, including a Byzantine-era lintel.
Theatre
A 2nd-century BC Greek theatre later renovated by the Romans. Built into the southern hillside, it once accommodated 5,000 spectators and overlooks the sea.
Assos
An archaeological collection and site area displaying artifacts and structural remains discovered during excavations of the ancient city.
Vouleftirio
The ruins of the ancient council chamber, or Bouleuterion, where the city’s senate held administrative meetings. It is located on the eastern side of the agora.
Stoa
A two-story colonnaded walkway dating back to the Hellenistic period. Situated north of the agora, it served as a social and commercial hub for ancient citizens.
