Auckland's Volcanic Peaks

Auckland is situated on a volcanic field comprising over 50 dormant and extinct vents. This list features prominent Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains) like Maungawhau and Maungakiekie, known for their well-preserved scoria cones and historical Māori earthworks. These sites range from Rangitoto, a 600-year-old basaltic shield volcano in the Hauraki Gulf, to Pukeiti, the field's smallest cone. Visitors can explore archaeological stonefields at Ōtuataua or view expansive tuff craters at Waitomokia and Crater Hill.
