Volcanic Peaks & Viewpoints

Auckland is built upon a monogenetic volcanic field comprising over 50 dormant cones and craters. These Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains) are sacred sites that often preserve archaeological features of former Māori pā (fortified settlements), such as terracing and storage pits. Visitors can explore prominent scoria cones like Maungawhau and Maungakiekie for panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf, or visit Pukekawa, the volcanic site housing the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Mount Eden

Takarunga / Mount Victoria is the highest volcano on Auckland's North Shore, rising to 66 metres in elevation. Its age is currently unknown.

Mount Wellington

Maungarei / Mount Wellington is a 135-metre volcanic peak and Tūpuna Maunga located in the Auckland volcanic field of Auckland, New Zealand.

Puketāpapa / Mount Roskill

A 110-metre scoria cone and Tūpuna Maunga. The site features a historic reservoir and offers views across the southwestern suburbs of Auckland.

Pukekawa

One of the oldest volcanoes in the Auckland field, located within the Auckland Domain. The crater rim houses the Auckland War Memorial Museum and surrounding public parklands.

Monte Cecilia

A scoria cone in Hillsborough, also known as Pah Farm. The site features the historic Pah Homestead and a park containing significant exotic tree specimens.

Taylors Hill

A scoria cone in Glendowie that formerly served as a Māori pā. The site features visible archaeological remains, including historical terracing and storage pits.
