Historic Churches and Chapels

Bilbao’s religious landscape spans centuries of architectural evolution, from the 16th-century Basque Gothic of San Vicente de Abando to the Neo-Gothic detailing of the Church of the Sacred Heart. This collection includes the Baroque Church of San Nicolás, historically linked to the city's maritime community, and the Ermita de Santa Águeda, a site of traditional pilgrimage. Church of San Nicolás de Bari

Baroque church completed in 1756, located at the entrance to the Casco Viejo. It features an octagonal floor plan and historically served the city's maritime and merchant guilds.

Church of San Vicente de Abando

A 16th-century Basque Gothic parish church situated next to Albia Gardens. It contains a notable Renaissance altarpiece and serves as the burial place of several prominent local figures.

Jesusen Bihotza eliza

Early 20th-century Neo-Gothic Jesuit church. The interior is characterized by its wide nave, colorful stained glass windows, and intricate stone carvings.

Iglesia de San José de la Montaña / San Jose Mendikoaren eliza

A Neo-Gothic temple designed by José María Basterra at the turn of the 20th century. It is managed by the Augustinian Order and features a decorative facade with prominent twin towers.

Ermita de Santa Águeda

A 16th-century Gothic hermitage located on the slopes of Mount Arraiz. It is the site of a traditional annual pilgrimage every February and features a simple, single-nave structure.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen

A mid-20th-century church in the Indautxu district known for its modern architectural lines. Completed in 1968, the structure features a distinctive triangular facade and contemporary stained glass.
