Must-See Historic Sites

Birgu’s military architecture is anchored by Fort Saint Angelo, the strategic stronghold that served as the headquarters for the Order of St. John during the Great Siege of 1565. The city's landward defenses feature a complex system of 16th-century fortifications, including high-platform cavaliers designed for heavy artillery and bastions that protected the land front from Ottoman advances. These structures represent centuries of defensive engineering overlooking the Grand Harbour.

Fort Saint Angelo

Fort St. Angelo is a bastioned fort in Birgu, Malta, located at the centre of the Grand Harbour.

St. James Cavalier (tower)

A 16th-century raised fortification part of Birgu’s land front. Built by the Order of St. John, this stone platform provided a high vantage point for heavy artillery to defend the city against landward attacks.

Couvre de Porte

An advanced defensive outwork located within the city’s land front fortifications. It was designed to shield the main gates of Birgu from direct bombardment and control access through the defensive ditch.

Bastion Castille

A major bastion on the land front of Birgu. During the Great Siege of 1565, it was the defensive responsibility of the Langue of Castile and was the site of intense combat against Ottoman forces.

St. John's Cavalier (tower)

An elevated 16th-century cavalier situated on the city's land front. This massive stone structure allowed the Order of St. John to position cannons with a clear line of sight over the surrounding territory.
