Alpine Huts & Shelters

This collection features remote high-altitude shelters across the Valais Alps, ranging from historic hospices to modern mountain huts. It includes the Great St Bernard Hospice, famous for its rescue dogs, and the Mönchsjochhütte, the highest guarded hut in Switzerland. These locations, such as Cabane de Prafleuri and Cabane du Mont-Fort, serve as essential stops on the Haute Route trekking trail, providing dormitory accommodation and meals for mountaineers navigating the region's glaciers and peaks.

Cabane de Prafleuri

Built at 2,657 meters near the Grande Dixence Dam, this hut originally housed workers during the dam's construction. It is a key stop on the Sentier des Bouquetins and the Alpine Pass Route.

Great St Bernard Hospice

Situated literally at the end of the world, this hospice is known for breeding the St. Bernard dog that later helped rescuing travellers.

Cabane du Mont-Fort

Located at 2,457 meters above Verbier, this stone hut offers views of the Mont Blanc and Grand Combin massifs. It serves as a stage on the classic Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt.

Bergli Hut

The Bergli Hut is a mountain hut of the Swiss Alpine Club, located south of Grindelwald in the canton of Bern.

Mönchsjochhütte

The highest guarded mountain hut in Switzerland at 3,657 meters. Situated on the Mönchsjoch, it is accessible from the Jungfraujoch railway station via a marked glacier path.

Cabane du Fenestral

Positioned at 2,453 meters between Ovronnaz and Fully, this hut overlooks the Mont Blanc massif and the Fully lakes. It is accessible via the Col du Demècre or the chairlift from Ovronnaz.

Bivacco Antigine

A small, unmanned emergency shelter located at 2,835 meters near the Passo d'Antigine on the border between Switzerland and Italy.

Bivacco Cingino

An unmanned bivouac located near Lake Cingino. The area is notable for the Alpine ibex that climb the near-vertical face of the nearby dam to lick mineral salts.
