Central Greece’s defensive landscape is defined by a network of Byzantine, Frankish, and Catalan fortifications. This collection highlights strategic strongholds like the Castle of Livadia, one of the few Catalan-built structures in Greece, and the Tower of Saint Omer, a remnant of 13th-century princely grandeur in Thebes. From the coastal defenses of Euboea to the mountain refuges of Prousos, these sites illustrate the region's complex history as a frontier between medieval empires and local lordships.

A

Castle of Salona

Built upon the ancient acropolis of Amfissa, this fortress features layers of Pelasgian, Byzantine, and Frankish masonry. It served as the seat of the Lordship of Salona during the 13th century.

Castle of Skyros

Perched on the highest point of Skyros town, this Byzantine and Venetian stronghold occupies the site of the ancient acropolis and houses the 10th-century Monastery of Agios Georgios.

Castle of Ypati

Situated on a rocky outcrop above the Spercheios valley, this castle was a key stronghold for the Duchy of Athens and Neopatras, particularly during the 14th-century Catalan rule.

Tower of Saint Omer

This 13th-century square tower is the most significant remnant of the palace of Nicholas II de Saint Omer, representing the height of Frankish architectural influence in medieval Thebes.

Medieval walls of Thebes

These defensive structures encompass the Cadmea, the ancient acropolis of Thebes. The remaining medieval sections reflect the city's strategic importance during the Byzantine and Frankish eras.

A rare example of Catalan military architecture in Greece, this 14th-century fortress overlooks the Krya springs and was once a primary defense for the Duchy of Athens.

Tripodas Plataion

A monument at Delphi commemorating the Greek victory over the Persians at the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC. The original Serpentine Column was later moved to Constantinople.
