Heritage Sites of Dordogne
Dordogne’s heritage spans millennia, from the Upper Paleolithic animal paintings of the UNESCO-listed Lascaux and Rouffignac caves to the Byzantine-inspired domes of Périgueux Cathedral. The region is defined by its defensive and residential architecture, featuring medieval fortresses like the Château de Losse and refined Renaissance estates such as Hautefort and Puyguilhem. These sites preserve a dense history of human occupation, showcasing architectural evolutions from prehistoric engravings and 13th-century bastide structures to the Louis XIII style of Château de Sauvebœuf.

A 13th-century former tithe barn located in the bastide of Monpazier. This historic stone building was used to store agricultural taxes collected by the church.
