Coastal Forts and Castles

Herceg Novi’s strategic position at the entrance of Boka Bay is marked by a complex defense network spanning Ottoman, Venetian, and Austro-Hungarian eras. This collection includes sea-level fortifications like Forte Mare and the island-based Mamula, alongside hilltop strongholds like Kanli Kula and Fort Španjola. These structures showcase diverse military architecture, from 14th-century Bosnian foundations to 19th-century Austro-Hungarian coastal batteries designed to guard the Adriatic coastline.

Forte Mare Forte Mare

14th-century fortress founded by Bosnian King Tvrtko I. Features defensive walls, secret passages, and a summer cinema overlooking the Adriatic.

Kanli Kula Kanli Kula

16th-century Ottoman fortress and former prison known as the "Bloody Tower." It currently serves as one of the Adriatic's largest open-air amphitheaters.

Tvrđava Mamula

19th-century Austro-Hungarian circular fortification located on Lastavica island. Originally built to prevent naval entry into the Bay of Kotor.

Citadella

Ruins of a Venetian-built sea fortress. Much of the structure collapsed into the sea during the 1979 earthquake, leaving historic remains near the harbor.

Fort Španjola

Situated 170 meters above sea level, this 16th-century fortress was initiated during a brief Spanish rule and completed by the Ottomans.

Austro-Hungarian coastal fortification located on the Luštica Peninsula, part of the 19th-century defense system for Boka Bay.
