Kurunegala’s landscape is defined by its ancient wewa system, a network of man-made reservoirs designed for irrigation and water management dating back to the medieval Kingdom of Kurunegala. These reservoirs, including Wendaru Wewa and Thampana Reservoir, support local paddy cultivation and provide essential habitats for regional birdlife. Located throughout the district’s intermediate zone, these sites offer insights into traditional Sri Lankan hydraulic engineering and provide views of the surrounding granite rock outcrops.
