Best of Lisbon

A mostly downhill walk through the heart of Lisbon, from the medieval castle on its hilltop to the grand squares and cafés below. You pass the Alfama viewpoints over the river Tagus, the fortress-like cathedral, the Manueline doorway of Conceição Velha, the riverside Commerce Square rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, Roman Lisbon beneath Rua Augusta, lively Rossio and the roofless Carmo Convent, and finish in Chiado beside Fernando Pessoa's favourite café. The walk starts outside the gate of São Jorge Castle, at the terminus of bus 737 from Praça da Figueira.
