Historic Castles and Ruins
This collection features significant medieval fortifications and manor houses situated along the Váh river and within the Malá Fatra mountains. It includes Strečno Castle, a reconstructed fortress guarding a narrow gorge, and the high-altitude ruins of Zniev, once a royal refuge. The list also highlights the Art Nouveau Kunerad Mansion and the Old Castle (Starý hrad), which dates back to the 13th century and served as an early defensive point for regional trade routes.
Strečno Castle
The Strečno Castle is a reconstructed ruin of a medieval castle of an irregular plan located in northern Slovakia, 12 km east of Žilina.
Kuneradský zámok
Art Nouveau hunting lodge built in 1916 for the Ballestrem family. Located in the Kunerad valley, this manor house features distinctive corner towers and was historically used as a summer residence.
Old Castle
13th-century medieval ruin situated on a steep cliff above the Váh river. Originally known as Varín Castle, it predates nearby Strečno and protected a vital trade route through the Domašínský meander.
Zniev
Ruins of one of the highest-situated castles in Slovakia, located at 985 meters above sea level. Founded in the 13th century, it served as a secure refuge for King Béla IV during the Mongol invasion.
Starý hrad
Medieval ruins of a 13th-century fortification, also known as Varín Castle. It is perched on a granite cliff overlooking the Váh river and the Domašínský meander.
