Archaeological & Heritage Sites

Munster contains some of Ireland's most significant prehistoric monuments, spanning from the Neolithic to the early medieval periods. This collection features the Poulnabrone portal tomb in the Burren's limestone landscape and the massive dry-stone walls of Staigue Fort. It also includes Bronze Age ceremonial sites like the Drombeg and Kenmare stone circles, alongside the defensive architecture of Leacanabuile, illustrating the evolution of Irish construction and ritual practices over several millennia.

Poulnabrone Dolmen

Neolithic portal tomb situated on the Burren's limestone pavement. Dating between 4200 BC and 2900 BC, the structure consists of a large capstone supported by two-meter-high portal stones. Excavations revealed the remains of over 30 individuals alongside stone tools and pottery.

Staigue Fort

Staigue or Staig is a ruined stone ringfort three miles west of Sneem, on the Iveragh peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland.

Drombeg Stone Circle

Drombeg stone circle is a small axial stone circle located 2.4 km east of Glandore, County Cork, Ireland.

Leacanabuile Ring Fort

A 9th-century defensive site featuring thick dry-stone walls and the foundations of internal dwellings. The ruins include remnants of both circular and rectangular houses, indicating different phases of occupation during the early medieval period.

Kenmare Stone Circle

Bronze Age axial monument composed of 15 stones arranged around a central boulder tomb. Known locally as "The Druid's Circle," it is one of the largest examples of its kind in southwest Ireland.
