New Zealand's natural landscapes range from the coastal Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve on the Coromandel Peninsula to the rugged limestone karst of Paparoa National Park. This selection features the ancient rainforests of the Waitakere Ranges, the extensive river systems and remote wilderness of Whanganui National Park, and the dense podocarp forests of the Catlins. These protected areas preserve unique geological features, such as the Punakaiki pancake rocks, and provide sanctuary for native flora and fauna across both the North and South Islands.
