Theatres, Cinemas & Arts

Newcastle and Gateshead host a dense concentration of cultural venues, from the Grade I listed Theatre Royal on Grey Street to the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, housed in a converted 1950s flour mill. The region's performing arts scene includes the purpose-built Northern Stage and the riverside Sage Gateshead. Independent film is centered at the 1930s Tyneside Cinema and the volunteer-run Star and Shadow Cinema, while Live Theatre focuses on developing new writing.
