Jeollabuk-do serves as a central hub for Korean history, encompassing the Baekje Kingdom's archaeological legacy and the Joseon Dynasty's administrative power. This collection features the UNESCO-listed Mireuksaji temple site, well-preserved stone fortresses like Gochang-eup Castle, and specialized institutions in Jeonju dedicated to traditional arts. Visitors can explore regional museums showcasing ancient relics, colonial-era history in Gunsan, and the living heritage of pansori and calligraphy.

A

Gochang-eup Castle

Built in 1453 during the Joseon Dynasty, this well-preserved stone fortress features a 1,684-meter perimeter. It historically served as a defensive outpost for the Honam region.

Iksan Mireuksaji (Iksan Mireuk Temple Site)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the remains of the largest Buddhist temple of the Baekje Kingdom. It features a reconstructed East Pagoda and the original West Pagoda, a National Treasure.

Pungnammun

The only remaining gate of the four original entrances to the Jeonju city wall. Rebuilt in 1768, this Joseon Dynasty structure is designated as Treasure No. 308.

Wibongsanseong

A 16-kilometer mountain fortress built during the Joseon Dynasty. It was designed to protect the royal portraits and ancestral tablets of the Yi family during times of war.

National Jeonju Museum

This museum houses over 40,000 artifacts from Jeollabuk-do, ranging from prehistoric times through the Baekje Kingdom and Joseon Dynasty, with a focus on regional folk culture and calligraphy.

Gunsan Modern History Museum

Located in a historic port, this museum documents Gunsan’s role as an international trading hub and its development during the early 20th-century modern era.

Wanggung-ri Site Museum

Displays artifacts excavated from the Baekje palace site, including jewelry, roof tiles, and Buddhist relics found within the neighboring five-story stone pagoda.

Jeonbukdorip Art Museum

Situated at the foot of Moaksan Mountain, this provincial museum hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary Korean art and works by prominent local artists from the Jeonbuk region.

Jeonjujeontongmunhwahoegwan

A cultural complex in the Jeonju Hanok Village that hosts traditional Korean weddings, pansori performances, and culinary workshops focused on regional Jeonju cuisine.

Guglibminsoggug-ag-won

The National Folk Gugak Center in Namwon specializes in preserving and performing traditional Korean folk music, dance, and pansori, reflecting the region's rich musical heritage.

Built on the site of pansori master Shin Jae-hyo’s former home, this museum explores the history and development of traditional Korean narrative singing through archival recordings and documents.

Focuses on the local history of Jeonju as the spiritual capital of the Joseon Dynasty, featuring exhibits on the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the city’s administrative history.

An on-site museum displaying over 19,000 artifacts recovered from the Mireuksa Temple excavations, including the significant sarira reliquary found inside the stone pagoda.

Jeonjubuchaemunhwagwan

Dedicated to the traditional Korean fan (Hapjukseon), this center showcases the craftsmanship, history, and artistic variations of Jeonju’s iconic bamboo and paper fans.

Choice Myeonghui Literature Center

Commemorates the life and work of author Choi Myeong-hui, best known for her epic novel Honbul, which details the lives of the local nobility and folk traditions.
