Religious Heritage of Rocamadour

Rocamadour has been a major pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages, centered around a miraculous sanctuary built into a limestone cliff. This collection features the UNESCO-listed Basilica of Saint-Sauveur and the Chapelle Notre-Dame, home to the 12th-century Black Madonna. The list includes the historic gates that welcomed medieval travelers and surrounding Romanesque churches, such as L'Hospitalet, which originally served as a refuge for pilgrims on the Way of Saint James.

Basilique Saint-Sauveur

A UNESCO World Heritage site and Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece built directly into the rock face. It serves as the spiritual center of the sanctuary and is a major stop on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

Chapelle Notre-Dame de Rocamadour

Rebuilt in 1479 after a rockfall, this chapel houses the 12th-century Black Madonna statue and a miraculous iron bell. It is the most sacred site within the Rocamadour complex.

A 13th-century chapel located within the sanctuary complex, featuring an altar dedicated to the mother of the Virgin Mary.

A Romanesque church featuring traditional local stonework, located in the rural surroundings north of the main sanctuary.

Église de l'Hospitalet

A 13th-century Romanesque church situated on the plateau. It was originally part of a medieval hospital complex built to provide shelter for visiting pilgrims.

Église Sainte-Madeleine

A 19th-century parish church featuring neo-Gothic architectural elements, located in the nearby commune of Alvignac.
