Historic Squares & Gates

Rothenburg ob der Tauber's medieval layout is defined by its central administrative hub and defensive perimeter. This collection features the Rathaus, a blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture on the Market Square, and the Burggarten, situated on the site of a 12th-century Hohenstaufen castle. The list also highlights the city's preserved fortifications, including the 14th-century Burgtorturm and the Siebersturm, which marks the southern entrance to the iconic Plönlein district.

Rathaus

A blend of 13th-century Gothic and 16th-century Renaissance architecture. The building features a 60-meter tower accessible to visitors for panoramic views of the medieval town center.

Burggarten

Set on the site of a 12th-century castle destroyed by an earthquake in 1356. The park offers views of the Tauber Valley and features 17th-century statues representing the four seasons.

Burgtorturm

Built in the 14th century, this is the tallest of the city's gate towers. It served as the western entrance to the town and features a defensive mask used for pouring pitch.

Kobolzeller Tor

Constructed around 1360 to protect the entrance from the Tauber Valley. The structure features a complex defensive courtyard and a double-gate system typical of medieval fortifications.

Siebersturm

A 14th-century tower that formed part of the town’s second fortification ring. It stands at the southern end of the Plönlein, historically separating the old town from the Spital district.

Brunnen am Plönlein

A historic stone fountain located at the iconic Plönlein fork. It sits at the intersection of the upper and lower roads leading to the Siebersturm and Kobolzeller Tor.
