Sao Tome das Letras Essentials

São Tomé das Letras sits atop a massive mineral deposit of quartzite, which defines its unique dry-stone architecture and rugged landscape. This list highlights the town's most significant geological and historical sites, from the ancient red rock paintings in Gruta São Thomé to the stacked-stone Casa da Pirâmide. Visitors can explore local legends at the Pedra do Disco, experience the optical illusion of Ladeira do Amendoim, and navigate the subterranean passages of Gruta Sobradinho.

Piramide

A stone structure built entirely of stacked quartzite without mortar. Located at a high point in the town's park, it serves as a panoramic observatory for viewing the Serra da Mantiqueira and the sunset.

Gruta São Thomé

Situated beside the Main Church, this cave contains red rupestrian paintings. Local legend links the site to an 18th-century discovery of a Saint Thomas statue by a runaway slave.

Cruzeiro

The highest point in the urban area, marked by a large cross. It offers 360-degree views of the surrounding valleys and the quartzite quarries that characterize the region.

Ladeira do amendoim

A geographical optical illusion where the road's incline creates the sensation that vehicles and water move uphill. It is located on the route toward the Vale das Borboletas.

Toca do Picu e Pedra da Bruxa

Adjacent rock formations where wind erosion has shaped the stone into a profile resembling a witch's face. The site includes a small cave and a viewpoint overlooking the valley.

Gruta Sobradinho

A 100-meter-long cave featuring low ceilings and narrow passages. The trail through the cavern leads directly to a natural pool and a small waterfall at the exit.

Toca do Leão

A small quartzite cave located near the city center. It is named for an internal rock formation that resembles a lion and is a frequent site for meditation.

Portal dos ventos

A natural stone archway situated on the edge of a ridge. The site is known for constant strong air currents and unobstructed views of the mountain horizon.

Pedra do disco

A flat, circular rock formation associated with local UFO folklore. It offers a quiet vantage point over the rural landscape outside the main town center.
