Sarpsborg nor Essentials

Sarpsborg’s landscape is defined by the Glomma river and a dense concentration of historical monuments. This selection features Sarpefossen, one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls, alongside medieval stone churches like Skjeberg and Tune. The list highlights the region’s prehistoric roots at the Solbergfeltet petroglyphs and offers panoramic views from modern architectural landmarks like Solbergtårnet and several observation towers scattered throughout the surrounding forests.

Sarpefossen

One of Europe's largest waterfalls by water volume, with an average flow of 577 cubic meters per second. It powers two hydroelectric power stations and has been a central landmark since the city's founding in 1016.

Solbergtårnet

A 30-meter-high architectural tower designed by Saunders Architecture. Located along the E6, it serves as an observation point overlooking the Skjeberg landscape and nearby Bronze Age petroglyph sites.

Solbergfeltet

A significant archaeological site featuring Bronze Age rock carvings. The petroglyphs depict ships, sun symbols, and human figures, providing insight into the region's prehistoric religious and social life.

Tune kirke

A large brick church rebuilt in 1865 in Gothic Revival style. The site has ancient roots; the 6th-century Tune Runestone, one of Norway's most important runic inscriptions, was discovered in the cemetery wall.

Skjeberg kirke

A medieval stone church dating back to approximately 1100. It features a Romanesque portal and houses a detailed Baroque altarpiece and pulpit from the 17th century.

Appelsintoppen

A 17-meter-high wooden observation tower located in the Sarpsborgmarka forest. It offers views of the surrounding woodland and the city from its elevated position.

Sølvstufossen

A waterfall on the Ågårdselva river, a branch of the Glomma. The area features a suspension bridge crossing the water and is a known spot for salmon fishing and hiking.

Høgnipen

Location of some of Norway's oldest Stone Age settlements, dating back nearly 10,000 years. The observation tower provides views over the historic landscape and toward the Oslofjord.

Kongehøien

A vantage point located near Sarpefossen, traditionally used by visiting royalty to view the waterfall. It offers a direct perspective of the massive water flow and the surrounding industrial heritage.

Skinterfjell

An observation tower located on a high ridge in the forest. It provides panoramic views of the Visterflo lake and the diverse landscape of the Østfold region.
