Skógar Absolute Essentials

Skógar is a historic settlement centered around the 60-meter-high Skógafoss waterfall and the Skógasafn cultural heritage museum. The area features several cascades along the Skógá river, including the secluded Kvernufoss and Steinbogafoss. The Skógar Museum preserves regional history through a collection of over 18,000 artifacts and original turf houses, while the reconstructed Skógakirkja showcases traditional Icelandic church architecture and interior woodwork.

Skogafoss

Spectacular waterfall approximately 60 meters high and 25 meters wide, featuring powerful cascades that often produce rainbows and panoramic views from the top.

Kvernufoss

A 30-meter-high waterfall located in a secluded gorge. A walking path leads behind the cascade, offering a viewpoint similar to Seljalandsfoss but with significantly fewer crowds.

Skógar Museum

This regional folk museum features an open-air collection of historic turf houses, a transport museum, and over 18,000 artifacts documenting South Iceland’s maritime and agricultural history.

Steinbogafoss

A waterfall located along the Skógá river, accessible via the hiking trail that climbs above Skógafoss. It is part of the 'Waterfall Way' leading toward the Fimmvörðuháls pass.

Skógar Church

Consecrated in 1959, this church was built to preserve traditional Icelandic ecclesiastical architecture. The interior features items salvaged from older decommissioned churches in the region.
