Sperlonga Essentials

Sperlonga’s historic center is defined by its whitewashed houses and narrow alleys perched above the Tyrrhenian Sea. The village is centered around the 16th-century Torre Truglia watchtower and two expansive sandy beaches, Ponente and Levante. Its Roman heritage is preserved at the Villa of Tiberius, a 1st-century seaside retreat featuring a massive natural sea cave. Adjacent to the ruins, the National Archaeological Museum displays monumental marble sculptures depicting scenes from the Odyssey, originally used to decorate the emperor's maritime grotto.

A

Villa of Tiberius

The emperor's seaside resort. There is also a museum which displays the art found in the villa, most of it focused on the Odyssey.

Torre Truglia

A 16th-century coastal watchtower situated on the tip of the promontory. Rebuilt multiple times after pirate attacks, it serves as a landmark separating the town's two main beaches.

Spiaggia di Ponente

Wide sandy beach stretching west from the town center toward Terracina. It features shallow waters and numerous organized beach clubs.

Spiaggia di Levante

Sandy shoreline extending from the base of the village to the Villa of Tiberius. This stretch of coast is known for its clear waters and views of the historic Torre Truglia.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Sperlonga

Displays monumental marble sculptures recovered from the nearby Roman villa, including the Scylla group and the blinding of Polyphemus, which originally decorated the emperor's sea cave.

Grotta di Tiberio

Large natural sea cave once used by Emperor Tiberius as a summer banqueting hall. It was originally adorned with elaborate water features and Hellenistic sculptures.

Ex Chiesa Sanctae Mariane de Spelonchae

12th-century Romanesque church located in the historic center. It contains medieval frescoes and served as the village's primary religious site until the late 19th century.
