Historic Fortifications and Pā Sites

This collection features significant Māori pā sites and colonial redoubts across the Waikato region. From the tragic battlegrounds of Mātakitaki and Rangiriri to the strategic coastal strongholds near Kawhia Harbour, these sites illustrate pre-European defensive engineering and the conflicts of the New Zealand Wars. Visitors can observe preserved earthworks, including terraces, ditches, and banks, that mark these historically vital defensive positions.
