Thermal Baths & Hot Springs

Viterbo sits atop a significant geothermal field, resulting in a high concentration of sulfurous thermal springs used since Etruscan and Roman times. This selection includes both developed spa resorts and rustic, association-managed sites like Bagnaccio and Masse di San Sisto. These volcanic waters, often reaching temperatures between 40°C and 58°C, are characterized by high mineral content and therapeutic properties. Many of these locations feature outdoor pools set within the Lazio countryside, maintaining a tradition of public bathing that spans centuries.

Sorgente Bagno del Papa

Named after Pope Nicholas V, who commissioned a palace here in 1454, and Pope Pius II, who renovated it. These historic springs provide hyper-thermal waters rich in sulfur and bicarbonate, utilized for centuries for their therapeutic properties.

Terme di Vulci

Located near the Vulci archaeological park, this facility features four large outdoor pools with naturally carbonated, ferruginous water. The pools offer varying temperatures and are situated within the rural landscape of the Maremma Laziale.

Masse di San Sisto

Managed by a local association, this site features two main thermal pools—one hot and one cold—providing a traditional frigidarium and calidarium experience. Access typically requires an annual membership fee to support site maintenance.

Pozzo Paliano

A rustic thermal area featuring outdoor pools with sulfurous water. It offers a natural, less commercialized environment focused on the raw mineral springs characteristic of the Viterbo region.

Bagnaccio

An ancient thermal site containing several outdoor pools and steam vents. Managed by an association, it is located on the remains of a Roman postal station along the Via Cassia, where travelers have bathed for millennia.
