Sacred Landscapes of Mangystau

Mangystau’s desert landscape contains a network of unique underground mosques and vast necropolises dating from the 10th to the 19th centuries. These sites, often carved directly into limestone cliffs or built from local shell rock, represent the spiritual history of the Silk Road and the traditions of the Adai tribe. The architecture features distinctive cross-shaped floor plans, petroglyphs, and intricate stone carvings that blend Sufi mysticism with ancient nomadic beliefs.

Shakpak-ata

A 10th-century underground mosque carved into a limestone cliff. The interior features a cross-shaped layout and ancient rock carvings depicting hands, horses, and solar symbols.

Sopan Ata

An extensive 10th-12th century underground complex containing several prayer rooms and the tomb of the Sufi teacher Sopan Ata, carved into the soft rock of a hillside.

Sultan Epe

An underground mosque and sacred well dedicated to the patron saint of water. The site includes a multi-room prayer hall and a surrounding necropolis.

Svatoe mesto Manaty-ata

A sacred burial site and mausoleum dedicated to the holy man Manaty-ata, serving as a significant pilgrimage point in the Mangystau region.

Adai ata

A spiritual complex and mosque situated atop Otpan Tau, the highest peak in the region. It commemorates the legendary ancestor of the Adai tribe.

Kentti baba

A 10th-16th century necropolis featuring three well-preserved mausoleums and an open-air prayer space marked by stone walls.

Koskar ata

An ancient Muslim cemetery characterized by a vast collection of kulpytas (carved stone steles) and koitas (ram-shaped gravestones) dating back several centuries.

Sisen

A major necropolis from the 13th-19th centuries, containing the monumental mausoleums of prominent Kazakh leaders, warriors, and spiritual figures of the Adai tribe.
